Summary

The Annual Native Hawaiian Convention is the largest gathering of organizations, policy makers, legislative representatives and federal agencies in Native Hawaiian community development. The Convention offered breakout sessions on issues related to education, housing, economic development, land access, and self determination.  

Themed Setting The Pace - Charting Our Course, this year's Convention was planned in recognition of the activism and strength of community in taking charge of our collective future.  Kau Ka Hoe. Nana I Na Hoku O Ka Lewalani.

Special Features included:

  • Native Hawaiian Film Festival which featured a diverse array of Native films focused on community, education, and culture.;
  • Cultural Knowledge Demonstrations & Workshops provided opportunities to participate in hands-on traditional arts and crafts activities;
  • CNHA Policy  Roundtable reviewed Policy Priorities and Set the Agenda for 2006-2007 year.
  • Hawaiian Way Fund Luncheon highlighted Native Hawaiian non profits using indigenous means to address community development challenges;
  • Hawaiian GRAMMY® Awards Banquet honored individuals and artists who dedicate their lives to Hawaiian values, knowledge and ingenuity through music, chant and hula; 
  • Gubernatorial Candidates Luncheon honored Native Hawaiian elected officials and the power of the Hawaiian vote;
  •  Bishop Museum Aloha Na Ali‘i Banquet celebrated the life and legacy of Prince Jonah Kalanianaole including special exhibit of rare artifacts;
  • Native Vote 2006 Luncheon featured community groups active in Voter Registration and two prominent national leaders of Native American and Pacific Islander Voter Education Campaign; and
  • Rock the Hawaiian Vote Concert featured Makana and the Barefoot Natives, Eric Gilliom and Willie K
