i scream, floats, & Sundays

Playing Now through September 3, 2005

What:  The new Summertime exhibit at the Hawai'i State Art Museum will include the short film, i scream, floats, & Sundays directed and produced by Native Hawaiian filmmakers Leah Kihara & Leanne Kang Ferrer.

Winner of the 2002 Hawai’i International Film Festival’s Hawai’i Filmmaker award, i scream, floats, & Sundays celebrates Hawaiian women in three vignettes that experiment with drama, documentary, and music video.  As a poetic expression reminiscent of a personal journal, i scream, floats & Sundays forges a view of the contemporary Hawaiian women’s quest for identity and balance in a world of chaos.

i scream, floats & Sundays was a recipient of Pacific Islander in Communication’s Short Film Initiative 2002 and has screened at the Hawaii International Film Festival, San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, Los Angeles Visual Communications Asian Film Festival, Pacifika New York Hawaiian Film Festival, IWGIA Indigenous Film Forum (Switzerland), San Diego Asian Film Festival, Washington DC Asian Pacific American Festival, Smithsonian Native Cinema Showcase, New Mexico, Smithsonian Native American Film & Video Festival New York 2003, Palm Springs Native American Film Festival, ImagineNATIVE Media & Arts Festival, Canada, & Cowitchan Aboriginal Film Festival, Canada.  It also aired nationally on PBS as part of the series Colorvision in 2004.

About the Summertime Exhibit:  Celebrating the summer season, Summertime will exhibit nearly 100 pieces from the State of Hawaii Art in Public Places Collection at the Hawaii State Art Museum.  A wide range of works – paintings, sculptures, ceramics, fiber works, mixed media pieces and works on paper – will be arranged thematically to evoke the feelings, experiences and memories of warm weather months.  The exhibit runs through September 3, 2005.  Also, the filmmakers will host a talk story lunch session at the museum on July 26, 2006 at noon.

Location:  The Hawaii State Art Museum is located at 250 South Hotel Street in downtown Honolulu across from the State Capitol. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). The museum is closed on State holidays. Admission is free.
