Check out the Learning to Grow (LTG) Dolly Parton Imagination Library Program in your community!

 

What:  LTG is piloting Dolly Parton's Imagination Library (IL) in selected communities throughout the State. IL will provide a free, age-appropriate book every month for all registered children between the ages of birth through four living in the following designated areas:

 

In addition to providing increased opportunities for young children to have a rich literacy environment in their homes, IL will serve as a means of building connections between families with young children and their prospective future elementary schools and increasing awareness and use of the FRNCs in pilot schools.

$40 Million Grant Opportunity for Service-Learning Projects

 

What:  The Corporation for National and Community Service has announced its 2006 Learn and Serve America grant competition to support high quality service-learning projects that engage students in community service projects linked to academic studies.

 

Approximately $40 million in grant funds will be available, subject to congressional appropriation, to support service-learning projects in a variety of settings. The grant funds will be divided between school-based, community-based, higher education, and tribal and U.S. territory programs. The funding is for the 2006-2007 school year, with possible continued funding for two more years.

 

Funds are available to intermediary organizations and may be used to create curriculum materials; support training and technical assistance activities; and make subgrants to local partnerships to carry out service-learning. State taking applications for farm leases

 

What:  The Hawaii Department of Agriculture is accepting applications for leases on a total of 14 lots ranging in size from 10 to 15 acres in the state's agricultural park system.

 

Twelve of the lots are in Pahoa on the Big Island, ranging from five to 25 acres. There is one lot available in Waianae and one in Kekaha, Kauai. Both are about 10 acres. The leases are for 45 years.

 

Applicant Eligibility:  Applicants must meet a list of qualifications, including be a U.S. citizen who has lived in Hawaii for at least three years, or have been a permanent-status alien who has resided in Hawaii for at least five years. Applicants also must meet several criteria demonstrating their farming knowledge and experience.

 

Application Deadline: December. 22.

Funding Opportunity: Craft Research Fund Offers Project and Graduate Research Grants

Deadline: November 28, 2005

What:   the Craft Research Fund seeks to advance scholarship in the field of studio craft in the United States by supporting high- quality research undertaken by university faculty, graduate students, museum curators, artists, and independent scholars. The fund's goals are as follows: to support innovative research on artistic and critical issues in craft theory, practice, and history; to explore the inter-relationship among craft, art, design, and contemporary culture; to foster new cross-disciplinary approaches to scholarship in the craft field in America; and to advance investigation of neglected questions in U.S. craft history and criticism.

Funding levels:  The Craft Research Fund is a three-year pilot program. Up to $75,000 in Project Grants and up to $20,000 in Graduate Research Grants will be awarded each year.

About Project Grants:  Project Grants of up to $15,000 each will be awarded to support research relating to the goals of the fund. Grant funds may be used to support documentation, such as images or rights to use images or text, as part of the research yet to be completed. The grant awards are not for the printing of already completed research. Proposals are welcome from academic researchers, independent scholars, doctoral students, and museum curators.

About Graduate Research Grants:  Graduate Research Grants of up to $10,000 each will be awarded to support research related to a thesis or dissertation relating to U.S. studio craft by students enrolled in graduate programs in any accredited college or university. Research must relate to a thesis or dissertation. The program is not about technical research into process (such as building kilns or testing glazes) or for the support for MFA exhibitions.

Future Leaders Exchange Civic Education Workshop Grant.

 

Deadline:  November 28, 2005

 

What:  The Office of Citizen Exchanges, Youth Programs Division of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announces an open competition to conduct the Spring 2006 Civic Education workshop for the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) program.

 

Public and private non-profit organizations meeting the provisions described in Internal Revenue Code section 26 USC 501(c)(3) may submit proposals to develop and conduct a one-week workshop in Washington, D.C. in spring 2006 that focuses on the basic tenets of the Constitution and the fundamental elements of a civil society, including the relationship between the federal government and state and local governments, and the rule of law in a civil society.

2006-2007 Postdoctoral/Visiting Scholar Fellowship Program in Ethnic Studies Incorporating Oral History Research

 

What:  The UCLA Institute of American Cultures (IAC), in cooperation with UCLA's four Ethnic Studies Research Centers (American Indian Studies Center, Asian American Studies Center, Bunche Center for African American Studies, Chicano Studies Research Center) and in conjunction with the UCLA Library's Center for Oral History Research offers four postdoctoral fellowships (one per Center) that focus on conducting and theorizing oral history research in African American, American Indian, Asian American, and Chicano communities. 

 

The fellowship includes a stipend (which can be used as a sabbatical supplement) that ranges from $32,000 to $34,000, research support of up to $4,000, and health benefits. Appointments are for a 9-month period beginning October 1. 

 

Postdoctoral/Visiting Scholar Fellows are expected to be in residence during their tenure, make a contribution to the research activities of the sponsoring Ethnic Studies Research Center, teach a 10-week seminar based on their research in collaboration with the Center for Oral History Research, and participate in a monthly discussion group with faculty and graduate students that explores theoretical and methodological issues related to the use of oral history.  Fellowships are open to candidates from all disciplines.

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Fellows/Scholars must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and hold a Ph.D. from an accredited college or university at the time of appointment. UCLA faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students are not eligible to apply.

 

Deadline:  Completed applications are due by January 13, 2006. Recipients will be notified in early April.

HOAP & HHCA Orientation Sessions

 

The Orientation Sessions are intended to provide participants with an introduction to HOAP and the homeownership process. These sessions will include an overview of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act which guides the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands’ mission and policies, inform participants about the homestead application process, provide updates on DHHL’s development schedule statewide, include an overview of the homebuyer education and case management services that are available, and introduce them to local Providers in the State.

 

To date, 12 sessions have been held attracting over 950 Native Hawaiians throughout the state of Hawaii, with amazingly positive results.  CNHA continues to receive high scores in the 90 percentile when participants are asked to rate the helpfulness of the materials, the effectiveness of the facilitator and the content of the materials.  Attend a session in your community to learn how you can achieve your dream of homeownership!

HOMEBUYER EDUCATION COURSES

The Homebuyer Education Courses are intended to provide individuals and families with homebuyer and financial literacy courses to build skills and help prepare for homeownership and loan prequalification.  Multiple local Providers deliver course sessions that include the following topics: 1) Understanding Credit & Obtaining a Mortgage Loan, 2) Personal Financial Management (budgeting, savings, etc), and 3) Credit Ratings, Credit Repair, Debt Reduction and Debt Restructuring.  Typically, a complete session entails a total of 10 hours delivered in 2-9 hour sessions over 1-4 days.  Participants are able to attend components of a complete series on a variety of dates throughout the year. 

 

Hawaii Community Lending (HCL) is a mortgage lender specializing in Hawaiian home land properties.  HCL conducts Homebuyer Education Workshops throughout the state on money management, accessing credit, home maintenance and other topics.   HCL also provides direct assistance in applying and qualifying for home loans, as well as financial assessments for DHHL and non-DHHL properties.  A schedule of HCL sessions in your community are as follows:
