Meeting Space Available for CNHA Member Organizations at the 5th Annual Native Hawaiian Convention
What: The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement is coordinating the 5th Annual Native Hawaiian Convention scheduled for September 25 – 29, 2006, at the Hawai‘i Convention Center. The theme this year is Setting The Pace - Charting Our Course, in recognition of the activism and strength of community in taking charge of our collective future.
CNHA is providing limited meeting space at the Hawaii Convention Center for CNHA member organizations that might like to hold special meetings, board meetings, staff retreats or other small gatherings during the week of the 5th Annual Native Hawaiian Convention.

We are excited to announce the nomination period has opened for the 2006 Native Hawaiian Business Award. The recipient of this award will be recognized during CNHA’s 5th Annual Native Hawaiian Convention, September 25 – 29, 2006, at the Hawai‘i Convention Center.
The 2006 Native Hawaiian Business Award will recognize a business that is Native Hawaiian owned and/or serves the Native Hawaiian community. Join CNHA on our Second Huaka’i with Hula Halau Na Pualei o Likolehua

The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) cordially invites you to join us to go on our second huaka’i. Hosted by CNHA member, Na Pualei o Likolehua, please join kumu hula Leina’ala Heine and alaka’i Mehana Hind for a workshop on “ohe kapala,” also known as bamboo stamping and marking of designs. Today, this cultural practice of art is most commonly printed on kapa, a hula skirt or a kihei. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about the history of the ohe kapala, how to create your own personal design, and most importantly the process on how to make and use one.
A very traditional halau, Na Pualei o Likolehua’s mission is to train women to become teachers in hula. These women learn the cultural traditions of mele oli and mele hula to uphold the values of traditional protocol, remain actively responsible to the land, enrich the spiritual balance of oneself through discipline, and lastly to empower our people through education.
Come relax and spend a few hours of renewal through fellowship and immersing ourselves in the inspiration of things Hawaiian.

“Starlight & Slippahs” - Honoring Senator Daniel Akaka
What/When: On Friday, August 25, Parents And Children Together (PACT) will host Starlight & Slippahs, a benefit fundraiser for PACT’s 13 family service programs. Please come for an evening of Hawaiian music, great food, and an exciting silent auction under the stars at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
This year’s distinguished honoree will be Senator Daniel Akaka. As someone long associated with family values in Hawaii, it is fitting that Senator Akaka is now helping to build the community of Hawaii by being PACT’s honoree at this event. Hawaii State Office of Elections Seeking Precinct Officials
What: The State Office of Elections is looking for interested individuals to work as Precinct Officials in the polling places on election days. It is a great opportunity for individuals or groups to learn about the election process. The Office of Elections also works with non-profit organizations and these groups can receive a stipend for all qualified participants and earn money for their organization's activities. The dates that Precinct Officials are needed are during the Primary Election, on Saturday, September 23, 2006 and then again on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 for the General Election.

Panel Presentation: “Saving Our Youth from the Juvenile Justice System”
What: The Council on Racial & Ethnic Justice will hold a riveting discussion on the status of “at-risk-youth” in Hawaii. An array of crucial issues confronting “at-risk-youth” and the juvenile justice system including substance abuse, mental health, suicide, juvenile sex offenders, human trafficking and the growing number of gangs will be addressed.
A dynamic panel of experts in the juvenile justice system in Hawaii has been invited to address these issues. The experts will consist of judges, social workers, probation officers, psychologists, professors and the other heroes who have worked tirelessly and extensively in developing strategies to “save and prevent our youth” from being trapped in the juvenile justice system.

What: Honolulu Habitat for Humanity is holding two Information Sessions for the families who are interested in applying for a Habitat house. The meetings will be held at the Waimanalo Public Library on:

Honolulu Habitat for Humanity helps low income families who cannot afford a traditional mortgage or loan to build/rebuild their home. If you or someone you know is living in a home that is in serious need of repair or has a vacant parcel of land and have not been able to afford to build a home on the site, please come to one of our Information Sessions.
Your attendance at the Information Sessions is your first mandatory step in becoming a partner family. Habitat homes are sold, not given, to approved homeowner applicants. Homeowners pay low, no-interest monthly mortgage payments toward the full ownership of their homes. Moving into and owning a Honolulu Habitat home improves the quality of life for its residents, not only in the physical surroundings but also by instilling a sense of pride and responsibility that comes with home ownership.

BIA presents the Remodel it Right Expo
What: The BIA Remodel It Right Expo speakers, seminars, and exhibits will run the gamut from financing a project to choosing a contractor and selecting appropriate materials to suit the budget.

From May to September of each year, The Remodel It Right Seminar Series would visit

Help Remove Barriers to Food Stamps and WIC participation
What: The Legal Aid Society of Hawaii, the Department of Human Services and the Department of Health have teamed up to help more people use food stamps and WIC (Women, Infants and Children) benefits and they need your input. In recent years, participation in these programs among eligible Hawaii residents has decreased. In an effort to uncover the reasons for declining participation, Rochelle Sparko, Staff Attorney for The Legal Aid Society, will be leading four focus group meetings with service providers on Oahu in early August. Discussions will include:
1. The barriers clients face to applying for or retaining food stamp and WIC benefits;
2. Outreach activities that will help reduce barriers to participation; and
3. Changes to the programs that would make it easier for your clients to apply for and keep their food stamp and WIC benefits.

Eligibility Expands for Community Express
What: The designation of the entire state of Hawaii as “Historically Underutilized Business Zone,” or HUBZone, has expanded the eligibility criteria for SBA’s popular Community Express Loan to include all small businesses in Hawaii.
Now, any small business owner with their principal office located in the state can access this special financing program. Prospective borrowers find a streamlined application process that doesn’t require collateral, an extensive business plan or tax returns to apply. A good credit score is the key to qualifying for this loan program for start ups and existing business owners.
The program requires free technical and management assistance from approved consultants, designed to increase the loan applicant’s chances of success.

The selected organization will receive a year-long campaign that includes marketing, public relations, creative executions and advertising in television, radio and print. Historically, Ad 2 Honolulu’s campaigns have been valued up to $1 million.

2006 Conference on Hawaiian Indigenous Education, Research, and Well-being
About the Conference: Planning for Kamehameha Schools’ annual research conference has begun. They invite teachers, curriculum developers, researchers, service providers, community leaders, parents, and grass-roots organizers to present their mana‘o and findings about Hawaiian Indigenous Education, Research, and Well-being. This year’s conference will showcase multidisciplinary research and emerging perspectives about Hawaiian well-being. A major focus of the conference will be Nä Lau Lama, a statewide collaboration to improve outcomes for Hawaiian students.

To date, 20 HOAP Orientation Sessions helped over 1,000 Native Hawaiians throughout the state of Hawaii navigate their way to homeownership. HOAP Orientation Sessions cover topics including the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act which guides the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands’ mission and policies, the homestead application process, updates on DHHL’s development schedule statewide, an overview of the homebuyer education and case management services that are available, and statewide local Providers.
