Civic Club Luau to Raise Scholarship Funds

“Ho`ikahi ka`ilau like ana…working together” is the theme of the Ko`olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club’s annual scholarship luau, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 2, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Puohala Elementary School in Kaneohe.

The annual event is the club’s major activity to raise funds for scholarships, according to Clarence Kelley, luau chairperson.

“We chose this theme because it symbolizes everything that we do – in our civic club, in our families, and in our community,” Kelley says. “If we don’t work together, things won’t get done.”

He says the theme also is appropriate for the scholarship program, because it involves the civic club and the community working together to help young scholars succeed in their studies by providing financial support.

The traditional Hawaiian-style luau will include 13 menu items, including ono kalua pig, squid luau, lomi salmon, chicken long rice, raw fish and many other fixings, Kelley says.

“One of the great features we have every year is our silent auction,” he says, “and this year, we expect to have a few exciting surprises in our auction.”

“We will also have Hawaiian wreaths and other handcrafts as well, all of which is to benefit the scholarship fund,” he said.

“We’ve also planned great entertainment to keep us all in a festive mood,” he adds.

Take-out orders will be allowed between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., Kelley said.

Also at the luau will be a collection site for donations of non-perishable food items and toiletries to be distributed in kokua baskets during the holidays to low-income families in the Ko`olaupoko area. Donations for the event – or for the scholarship program – are also welcome.

Tickets or reservations can be obtained by contacting Kelley at 239-9504 or via e-mail at georgimaile@aol.com.

For general information about the Ko`olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club, its cultural education programs or other activities, contact Mahealani Cypher at 247-3685 or via e-mail at malamapono@aol.com.
