Attend the 2007 Hawaii Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations (HANO) Conference on May 9
What: JOIN Hawaii nonprofit colleagues – executive directors, board members, chief financial officers, program directors, staff members and emerging leaders representing HANO’s more than 250 member nonprofits statewide – for a full day of activities, workshops, networking and deliberations at "Moving Forward Together," HANO’s 2007 Conference, sponsored by `Oleo Community Television.
To encourage nonprofits from all islands to attend, conference sessions are scheduled to begin and end to accommodate airline schedules, a limited number of scholarships are available and free shuttle buses will provide transportation from the airport to the conference.
The "Moving Forward Together" planning committee, chaired by Laura Robertson of Goodwill Industries Hawaii, designed the conference to prepare nonprofits for the future, focusing on sustainability, entreprenuerism and preparing a new generation for succession and success.

First Nations’ Futures Applications Now Available!
The First Nations’ Futures program offers a fellowship focusing on leadership development and is accepting applications now. The application deadline is MAY 31, 2007. The 12-month program features a 2-week Summer Institute at Stanford University, and three community-based projects in Hawaii, New Zealand and Alaska.
To be eligible for the program, you must have a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years experience OR a minimum of 8 years work experience in one of the following: natural resource management, urban and regional planning, Hawaiian studies, public administration, business administration, law, science, geography, social work or education. Also required -- a demonstrable track record of service and leadership within the Native Hawaiian community.

Summer Internship for Ecosystem and Rare Species Management on Military Lands
What: Summer intern will assist Natural Resource Staff with the implementation of field management tasks. Tasks will include but not be limited to: Monitoring rare plant species to determine phenology and threats; Conducting threat control around rare plant species such as rat and arthropod control; Identifying the location of and/or obtain Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates for rare native taxa while in the field; Conduct weed control with both mechanical and chemical techniques and other activities.
Location(s): The work sites for this internship include military lands in both the Northern Wai'anae and Northern Koolau Mountains on the island of Oahu. All operations are based out of the Army Natural Resource Center at Schofield Barracks, Oahu.
Applicants must have a minimum of a High School diploma. Enrolled in a Bachelor program in environmental sciences (e.g., ornithology, zoology, wildlife biology, botany or a related discipline). Experience with Hawaiian flora and fauna. Computer literate in word processing and spreadsheet programs. Must possess State driver's license. Physically able and willing to carry out organized field work under rigorous physical conditions. Cannot be acrophobic. Able to hike up to 10 miles per day, backpack 35 pounds, and camp in remote and rugged areas for a period of several days.
The pay rate is $9.00 per hour for full time employment for up to three months and the closing date is April 23, 2007.

What: Preschool Open Doors program has begun there open enrollment for the school year 2007-2008, the enrollment period is March 2, 2007 to April 30, 2007. Preschool Open Doors can provide a subsidy for your child's preschool costs in Hawaii. Families with children born in 2003 (any healthy child may apply) or children born in 2004 with "special needs" ( who are not eligible for the DOE Special Education program this includes ESL, Homeless, Special Needs, or Environmental Risk).

Famoksaiyan: "Our Time to Paddle Forward" – Summit on Decolonization and Native Self-Determination
What: Indigenous Chamorros of the Marianas Islands will be hosting a three-day conference in Berkeley and Oakland at the end of April. FA MOKSAIYAN: "Our Time to Paddle Forward" Summit on Decolonization and Native Self-Determination will provide a space for Chamorros and other indigenous groups to strengthen existing networks, build new ones, and work together to promote their work on decolonization, cultural and historical revitalization and creative expression. The conference is open to anyone interested in improving the opportunities and life conditions of indigenous peoples throughout the world.

The Famoksaiyan conference was held for the first time last year in San Diego where more than 100 Chamorro scholars, activists and community leaders gathered to share their work and research, and to participate in discussions relating to the future of their people and native homelands. Many left the conference inspired and wanted to know what they could do next. Many have gone on to participate in human rights, demilitarization and decolonization forums in Guam, the continental US and internationally. Some testified before the United Nations, calling attention to Guam’s continued colonial status. At this year’s conference, organizers hope to provide resources, ideas and opportunities for those who attend to participate in and have a positive influence on the future of Chamorros in the Diaspora and in their homeland.

Pacific Educational Conference 2007
What: The Pacific Educational Conference (PEC) will take place in Honolulu, Hawai‘i from July 9 to 12. It will be cohosted by the Hawai‘i DOE, the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa College of Education (UHCOE), and Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL).
PEC is one of the largest educational conferences in the western Pacific and a major source of professional development opportunities for educators. The PEC is organized by Pacific educators for Pacific educators, who also present the majority of the workshops.
Theme: The theme for PEC 2007 is Language Acquisition: Knowledge That Empowers. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) is the driving force to build state capacity to assist districts and schools in meeting the needs of all students by: (a) identifying and implementing proven practices and programs; (b) strengthening teacher quality; and (c) building and sustaining systemic support for school improvement, resulting in closing achievement gaps and improving achievement outcomes.

What’s New with the HOAP Call Center?
To date, over 5,860 contacts were made to the HOAP Call Center by phone, e-mail or in- person and over 6,125 referrals were made to HOAP Providers. Both Hawaiian Community Assets and Hawaii HomeOwnership Center delivered 87 homebuyer education courses reaching over 1,895 attendees. Providers continue to help over 5,960 people to financially prepare themselves for homeownership opportunities. Over 11,600 people have been in contact with HOAP since January 2005.
Hawaiian Community Assets (HCA) and Hawaii HomeOwnership Center (HHOC) conduct Homebuyer Education Courses that include the following topics: 1) Understanding Credit & Obtaining a Mortgage Loan, 2) Personal Financial Management (budgeting, savings, etc), and 3) Credit Ratings, Credit Repair, Debt Reduction and Debt Restructuring. Providers offer these courses in 1 to 4 day sessions where participants are able to attend sessions on a variety of dates throughout the year with a HOAP Provider.
