CNHA is proud to announce the Kauwela Series! We have teamed up with Ka Makana Aliʻi Shopping Center to bring you a slew of summer workshops hosted by renowned cultural practitioners: lei master – Uncle Bill Char; cultural leader and educator – Kumu Hina Wong; and CNHA manager and kumu ‘ōlelo, Maka Casson-Fisher.
Papa Hana Lei (Lei Making Workshop) with Bill Char
June 18 and July 9, (6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.) Center Court
Bill Char is an award winning master lei maker. Kumu Bill has crafted countless lei for hālau and judged competitions in Hawaiʻi and on the continent. His lei have been featured in exhibits and festivals around the world.
This rare workshop will give you the opportunity to learn the art of lei making from one of Hawaiʻiʻs hidden treasures.
A limited number of lei making kits will be available for purchase.
Papa Mele (Hawaiian Song and Music Workshops) with Hinaleimoana Wong
June 25, July 16 and 30 (6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.)
Hinaleimoana Wong is community leader, teacher, kumu hula, and cultural practitioner. She has been recently recognized by KITV as one of Hawaiʻi’s most remarkable women.
Through a series of workshops we will learn from Kumu Hina the Hawaiian perspectives that shape the mele that we sing, dance, and chant in honor of our ʻāina.
Papa ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language Workshops) with Makalapua Casson-Fisher
July 2 and 23 (6:00 p.m.) Center Court
CNHA Program Manager, Makalapua Casson-Fisher, is a fluent speaker and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi teacher. Kumu Maka is a Native Hawaiian leader, community educator, cultural practitioner, and kupa of Oahu’s North Shore.
Come join Maka and others this summer to learn and explore the names and mo’olelo of significant land and elemental features of this ʻEwa moku.
